welcome to labour4calder
On these pages we aim to tell you about the progress in the campaigns we are currently running, update you on our progress, tell you about our political ideas and principles and give you a chance to have your say about what we need to do to improve our community.
My name is Janet Oosthuysen and I am the candidate for Calder ward. I have a strong, valued and valuable team working with me. We are all socialists, and aren’t afraid to admit that whilst many things have improved under Labour, some things could have been better. But we also know that Labour is our natural home. It’s where we find most people we agree with, where, despite it all, most of our views are represented. We believe in grass roots action, in strength in unity, in representing and protecting the voiceless in our communities.
We want to stand up for the working people in our communities- to protect them with better trade union rights, better wages, better conditions.
We also want to stand up for those who do not work- and not by taking away their benefits and forcing them back to work or taking away their housing.
We believe in an ethical foreign policy.
We believe in true comprehensive education.
We believe in a health service free at the point of use - no strings.
We believe in council housing and protecting people from exploitative landlords.
We believe in renewable energy but are sceptical of relying on nuclear power.
Our labour party membership cards state that we want a society where we “live together, freely, in a spirit of solidarity, tolerance and respect.” Don’t we all?
